Research Assistant

Derek graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology and a minor in Urban Studies (2017). His education was focused on understanding the effect the built environment has on human and community health. Currently, he is especially interested in understanding how to improve health outcomes through transportation and land-use policies. 

Previously, Derek was a Stanford In Government Fellow working with health equity at the Santa Clara County Public Health Department. Derek has also worked in science communications at the National Institutes of Health. In his academic projects, he worked on a bike metrics mapping project with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and published a paper on the relationship between disparities in public transit investment and health outcomes of the Atlanta metropolitan area in the Stanford Journal of Public Health (SJPH). He also competed in the 2017 Bank of America Low-Income Housing Challenge at the regional competition in San Francisco.

Derek is a lifelong member of the Stanford Axe Committee and enjoys golfing, cooking, and exploring new places. He is a native of the South Bay Area.
